Barkly Regional Arts works on various arts-based projects in partnership with a number of youth-based organisations throughout Australia.
ATYP (Australian Theatre for Young People)
Since 1963 the Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp) has become Australia's leading youth theatre company. Aside from the Sydney-based company’s work on major theatre productions, atyp extends its reach to remote communities across the country – improving access for all young Australians, regardless of economic or geographical barriers, to share their stories and develop their skills. Since 2004, atyp has been working in Tennant Creek with the aim of offering young people purposeful, imaginative and life-enhancing theatre experiences. They are currently working in collaboration with Barkly Regional Arts and the Julalikari Council Aboriginal Youth Development Unit on the residential One Place, Two Worlds 2009-2010 project. Beyond Empathy
Beyond Empathy uses the arts to influence change in the lives of individuals and communities experiencing recurring hardship. The organisation uses an ‘asset-based’ model of social change that focuses on people’s assets – rather than their issues or problems – and works collaboratively with participants, support agencies and community members to build social cohesion and influence social change. As part of Beyond Empathy’s far-reaching project to reach out to marginalised youth, artists regularly come to Tennant Creek for residential workshops. Their mission - using the arts to enrich the lives of youngsters and to influence change in the lives of individuals and communities. Visit www.beyondempathy.org.au
