Visual Arts Outreach Pilot Program

In 2010 BRA sourced DET funding to facilitate a visual arts non-accredited training program to run as a Visual Arts Outreach Pilot program with four identified communities (who do not have established Art Centres): Mungkarta, Mangalawurru, Canteen Creek and Elliott.

The aim of the pilot program is to continue to provide visual arts training in developing arts practices and quality works, greater understanding and control of individual and group involvement in the visual arts industry and a raised profile of artists from the Barkly region. The program is tailored to each communities depending on their needs. As well as providing training, the purpose of the program is to work closely with the artists to identify and establish how a long-term program would evolve and operate.

The model of the pilot program will be expanding out into a two-year program. During this time BRA will look at longer term funding for 2011 – 2012.

Annual Barkly Artists Camp

The Barkly Artists Camp is run in partnership with Desart.  The camp, in it's third year, aims to provide a space for networking between artists and Art Centre's in the Barkly Region and expose artists to new skills and opportunities for arts development.

This year's week long camp was held at Likkapurta Outstation, 60km east of Tennant Creek.  It brought together over 30 artists from Ali-Curung, Ampalawitja, Epenarra, Mungkarta, Mangalawurru and Tennant Creek.  With guest artist Sandy Elverd, artists were exposed to new skills and techniques in basket weaving and making fibre sculptures.

Artists of the Barkly Marketplace

The Artists of the Barkly Marketplace is an event, which occurs four times a year at Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre in Tennant Creek.

The marketplace includes stalls from Aboriginal art centres and artist groups from all over the Barkly Region and is a fantastic opportunity for visitors to pick up some affordable art and to meet artists from the region.
